The standard deadline for submitting your online Self Assessment tax return for the 2025/26 tax year is 31 January 2027. Payment of tax due is also required by that date. The tax year covers 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026.
If you have not yet prepared your return, now is a good time to gather your records and arrange help. J&J Accountants supports individuals, sole traders and landlords in Deal and across Kent with preparing and submitting their returns.
Who may need to file
You may need to complete a Self Assessment tax return if you:
- Are a sole trader with more than £1,000 in gross trading income, before expenses.
- Receive rental income from property or land.
- Receive other untaxed income, such as savings interest, dividends or foreign income, where reporting is required.
- Need to report other taxable income or gains to HMRC.
Your circumstances determine whether a return is required. Check HMRC’s guidance on who must send a tax return or speak to J&J if you are unsure.
What to do now
Gather your income records, invoices, bank statements and expense receipts. Make sure you have details of all relevant income and allowable expenses so your return can be prepared accurately.
Allow time to review the figures, submit your return and arrange payment. Preparing early gives you more time to understand what you owe and resolve any missing information.
Dates to remember
- 31 October 2026: the standard deadline for HMRC to receive a paper return.
- 31 January 2027: the standard online filing and tax payment deadline.
If you are new to Self Assessment and have not registered, contact HMRC promptly: the usual notification deadline for 2025/26 was 5 October 2026. HMRC may give late registrants a different filing deadline, but the tax payment deadline remains 31 January 2027.
Missing a filing deadline can result in a late-filing penalty. Late payment can also lead to interest and penalties. See HMRC’s current deadlines and penalty guidance for details.
